A militant ambush in Iran’s southeastern Sistan and Baluchistan province on Saturday resulted in the deaths of at least 10 police officers, according to state media reports.
The attack occurred in Taftan when two police patrol units, responding to a local dispute, came under heavy fire while returning to their station, Iran’s state news agency IRNA reported, citing police sources.
Following the incident, Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni initiated an investigation, forming a committee of police commanders and senior ministry officials to assess the situation and report findings swiftly.
The militant group Jaish al-Adl, which has a history of targeting Iranian security forces, claimed responsibility for the ambush on social media. Sistan and Baluchistan, a province bordering Pakistan, frequently experiences unrest due to militant activity, including April’s deadly ambush on police that left five officers dead.
This latest attack also comes shortly after reported Israeli airstrikes on military sites across Iran, which claimed the lives of two Iranian soldiers. The situation in the region remains tense, with increased security efforts underway.
