Korean Cultural Centre in Nigeria (KCCN), says it registered more than 100 Nigerians for its Hangeul class in 2024.
Ms Yujin Lee, Programme Officer of KCCN disclosed this in an interview with newsmen on Monday in Abuja.
The reports gathered that Korean word ‘Hangeul’ means ‘Great script’ or ‘Korean script’. It is the name of the Korean alphabet and writing system.
Korean Hangeul is significant because it serve as a powerful symbol of Korean identity.
It also enables the widespread literacy by making the language accessible to all levels of society, preserving Korean culture and heritage particularly during periods of foreign influence.
The Hangeul’ represent a unique achievement in linguistic design created specifically for the Korean language by king Sejong, fostering a sense of national unity.
It is a cornerstone of Korean culture and a key element in maintaining their distinct identity.
According to her, the number of Nigerians that registered for the class reflected a growing interest in the Korean language among young Nigerians, creating more synergy between Nigeria and Korea culture.
She said that the ‘Hangeul’ provided the opportunity for Nigerians to had full knowledge of the Korean alphabet and how they are properly used in writing.
Lee further said that Nigerians would explore Korea culture through numerous activities scheduled for 2025.
In 2025, our focus will be on intensifying interest in Korean culture through a variety of events.
“The KCCN events include; cooking classes, Hansik (Korean food) competition, Hanbok ( Korean traditional clothing), as well as the continuation of our language and Taekwondo classes,” she said.
The programme officer added the K-pop Academy would serve as a unique opportunity for Nigerians to learn K-pop dance from a professional Korean instructor.
“K-pop Festival will serve as Nigeria’s preliminary round for the Changwon K-pop World Festival in Korea”.
