A mass wedding ceremony for 120 Afghan couples was held on Wednesday in Herat province, organized by a charity to support families facing economic challenges.
Mawlawi Abdul Sadiqi, the head of the organizing charity, revealed that each newlywed couple received household items including carpets, blankets, and kitchen tools worth 100,000 Afghanis (approximately $1,460 USD).
The initiative aimed to address the financial hurdles many young Afghans face, including unemployment, economic instability, and the cultural burden of high dowries and expensive wedding customs, which often delay marriages in the poverty-stricken nation.
“Many young people cannot afford lavish ceremonies, and this event helps them start their lives together without the heavy financial strain,” Sadiqi explained.
The event in Herat follows a similar mass wedding held earlier in Sari Pul province, where 100 couples celebrated their union.
Afghanistan’s caretaker government has repeatedly urged citizens to avoid extravagant wedding traditions and focus on simpler ceremonies to ease the economic burden on families. These mass weddings are seen as a step towards fostering more sustainable and inclusive cultural practices.
