133 Hospitalized After Mass Food Poisoning in Southern Myanmar

A mass food poisoning incident in Oktwin township, located in Myanmar’s southern Bago region, led to the hospitalization of at least 133 people, according to a statement from the State Administration Council on Thursday.

The outbreak occurred on Wednesday evening after residents consumed a donated meal of fried vermicelli, sauce, rice, and tamarind egg curry, distributed earlier that morning.

Symptoms of food poisoning, including severe abdominal pain, vomiting, and diarrhea, surfaced around 8 p.m. local time, prompting a swift response. The affected individuals were transported to Taungoo General Hospital, where 68 were treated as outpatients while 65 were admitted for further care.

By Thursday morning, 41 of the inpatients had recovered and were discharged, according to hospital officials.
