A 17-year-old girl, identified as Elizabeth, drowned while fetching water from a river in Koropka, a suburb of Minna, Niger State, due to the ongoing water scarcity in the community.

According to local residents, the incident occurred on Saturday, March 8, 2025, when Elizabeth, her sister, and other community members went to the river for water. Her sister reportedly rushed for help, but it took nearly an hour before youths in the area recovered her body.

Zakari Lambata, a resident, emphasized the urgent need for government intervention, stating that Koropka residents have been relying on the river due to the disruption of pipe-borne water supply caused by construction work. He urged authorities and contractors to restore access to clean water to prevent further tragedies.

The River Chanchaga remains the primary water source for the community, as the official supply from the water board remains cut off.
