2 Schoolchildren Electrocuted While Sheltering From Rain in Anambra
Two unidentified schoolchildren lost their lives after being electrocuted during a heavy downpour in the Nnewichi area of Nnewi North Local Government, Anambra State.
The tragic incident occurred at St. Peter’s Claver Junction, where the minors had taken refuge under a roadside shop to escape the rain.
Eyewitnesses and CCTV footage from the scene, which surfaced online on Tuesday, showed several pupils seeking shelter when the electrocution happened.
A resident near the area told Punch that panic spread among onlookers as the tragedy unfolded within seconds.
“Several pupils were standing under the shop during the rainfall, but tragedy struck when two of them, whose bodies were wet, came in contact with a live metal. They were electrocuted instantly, while others narrowly escaped,” the witness said.
He added that the shop owner had not yet opened for business when the incident occurred. Security officers and passers-by later used protective gloves to remove the victims’ bodies.
Spokesman for the Anambra State Police Command, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, confirmed the incident but said investigation was ongoing.
“The facts are not yet clear, but the divisional police officer has been directed to obtain details for a comprehensive report,” Ikenga stated.
