200 Migrants Attempt UK Crossing After Fatal Channel Incident
Around 200 migrants attempted to cross the English Channel from France to the UK on Wednesday, just a day after 12 people tragically lost their lives trying to make the same journey.
Angele Vettorello, a charity worker and Coordinator at Utopia 56 in Calais, confirmed the attempted crossings, stating that French authorities intervened to stop them. “The crossings won’t stop,” Vettorello said. “This morning, we saw more than 200 people trying to cross, but police were at the shore, stopping them.”
Vettorello added that this summer has seen an increase in fatalities in the Channel, with last week being particularly busy for attempted crossings. “We received distress calls from people in boats on the water. For example, on Friday, we got eight calls from different boats,” she shared.
