2024 Paris Paralympics: Bolaji Clinches Nigeria’s First Medal in Badminton
Eniola Bolaji secured Nigeria’s first medal at the 2024 Paris Paralympic Games by claiming bronze in the Women’s Singles SL3 para badminton event.
Bolaji delivered a dominant performance, defeating Ukraine’s Kozyna Oksana in straight sets, 2-0 (21-9, 21-9), to make history as the first African to win a Paralympic badminton medal.
Reflecting on her journey, Bolaji acknowledged the pressure she faced in the semi-finals, which she lost to the world number 2 seed. “I was anxious to win and made mistakes because I had previously beaten my opponent twice before the Paralympics. I’ve learned to remain calm under pressure,” she told newsmen.
Bolaji’s coach, Dina Sarinena, praised her performance, highlighting the challenges she overcame, including a broken racket during the semi-finals. Sarinena emphasized the importance of gaining more international experience.
Sunday Odebode, President of the Paralympic Committee of Nigeria, expressed optimism for Nigeria’s future at the Paralympics, believing Bolaji’s medal will pave the way for more success.
