The Super Eagles have announced their intention to boycott the return leg of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Libya due to mistreatment by Libyan authorities.
In a statement issued by Ademola Olajire, Communications Officer of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), it was revealed that the Nigerian team has been stranded at Al-Abaq Airport. Libyan officials have reportedly refused to clear the team, leaving the players and staff frustrated and fatigued.
“The players and officials have been left stranded without any reception or transportation provided by the Libyan Football Federation (LFF),” Olajire said. “The NFF made arrangements for alternate transport, but the team’s flight was unexpectedly diverted, causing further delays.”
As tensions rise, the players have resolved not to play the match. NFF officials are now working to arrange their return to Nigeria.
The Super Eagles were originally set to face Libya in Benghazi on Tuesday, following a 1-0 victory in the first leg held in Uyo. Despite the team’s current lead in Group D, the unfolding situation in Libya has cast uncertainty over their AFCON qualifying campaign.
