2026 World Cup Qualifiers: Benin Coach Gernot Rohr Predicts Tough Battle Against Super Eagles
Benin Republic’s head coach, Gernot Rohr, has acknowledged that his team faces a tough test ahead as they prepare to take on the Super Eagles of Nigeria in their final 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying match.
The encounter is set to take place next week at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo.
Rohr’s Cheetahs strengthened their qualification hopes on Friday night with a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Rwanda’s Amavubi at the Amahoro Stadium in Kigali. Tosin Aiyegun netted the decisive goal 10 minutes before full time.
Reflecting on the match, Rohr admitted that while the victory was crucial, facing Nigeria’s star-studded squad would present a far greater challenge.
“It was a very tactical match — difficult, with very little football,” Rohr told reporters after the game. “Since it was so important, you can’t come here to put on a show. We were here to get a result. But playing against Osimhen, Lookman, Simon, and Iwobi is another story entirely. This result, however, gives us confidence.”
The former Super Eagles coach will be hoping to guide Benin to another strong performance as they aim to keep their World Cup qualification hopes alive.
