At least 23 people have died following a fire at a nightclub in India’s western tourist state of Goa, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

The blaze erupted around midnight on Saturday in the Arpora area, according to Goa Chief Minister Pramod Sawant, who announced the incident in a post on X.

“Today is a very painful day for all of us in Goa. A major fire incident at Arpora has taken the lives of 23 people,” Sawant said.

The chief minister visited the scene and ordered a comprehensive inquiry into the cause of the fire. He said investigators would determine whether fire safety regulations and building codes were properly followed.

“The inquiry will examine the exact cause of the fire and whether fire safety norms and building rules were adhered to. Those found responsible will face the strictest action under the law,” Sawant added.

Preliminary reports by the Press Trust of India suggest the fire may have been triggered by a cylinder blast. Most of the victims were said to be members of the nightclub’s kitchen staff.

Goa, located along India’s western coastline, is one of the country’s most popular tourist destinations.
