26 Children Die of Malnutrition in Afghanistan’s Badakhshan Over Five
At least 26 children under the age of five have died from malnutrition and food shortages in Afghanistan’s northern Badakhshan province over the past five months, a hospital source revealed on Thursday.
Dr. Abdul Malik Rofi, a local medical practitioner, confirmed that 365 children under five were admitted to the hospital during this period, with 26 succumbing to the effects of malnutrition. This alarming trend was also reported by Afghan media outlet TOLO News.
Since March 20, the hospital has treated 2,696 children, according to the report.
Medical experts attribute the surge in malnutrition cases to widespread poverty, a lack of nutritious food, and inadequate healthcare services. The region’s limited access to healthcare facilities has further compounded the issue.
Aid agencies warn that approximately 2.9 million children under the age of five are facing severe food shortages or are at risk of malnutrition across Afghanistan, heightening concerns about the country’s ongoing humanitarian crisis.
