The arrests followed an intensive manhunt, as confirmed by Police Minister Senzo Mchunu during the victims’ memorial service on Sunday.

Mchunu also indicated that a fourth arrest is expected soon. The attack, which left the country in shock, saw gunmen open fire on two homes during a family gathering, killing 15 women and 3 men. The victims, aged 14 to 64, were mostly shot in the head, according to local reports.

The suspects are due to appear in court on Monday to face charges. While authorities are still working to establish the motive behind the killings, the tragedy has intensified calls for improved police protection and action against gender-based violence in the country.

South Africa’s murder rate remains among the highest in the world, with over 27,000 murders reported in 2022.

Deputy Minister Mmapaseka Letsike, who attended the memorial, urged for stronger efforts from civil society, traditional leaders, and the government to combat gender-based violence and strengthen community safety.
