A 4.8-magnitude earthquake struck Yongning County in Yinchuan, the capital of Northwest China’s Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, at 10:01 a.m. on Thursday, the China Earthquake Networks Center (CENC) reported.
The quake’s epicenter was pinpointed at 38.4 degrees north latitude and 106.22 degrees east longitude, with a depth of 10 kilometers, according to Xinhua News Agency.
The tremor was felt in neighboring regions, including Wuhai and Bayannur in Inner Mongolia, and Lanzhou in Gansu Province, as reported by CCTV News. However, there have been no reports of building collapses or casualties as of press time.
CENC noted that the area surrounding the epicenter has experienced 21 earthquakes of 3.0 magnitude or above within a 200-kilometer radius over the past five years. The most significant was a 4.9-magnitude quake recorded on December 31, 2023, in Baiyin, Gansu Province, 214 kilometers from Thursday’s epicenter.
