4 children among 14 injured in Russian airstrike on Kyiv, officials say
At least 14 people, including four children, were injured in an overnight Russian airstrike on Ukraine’s capital, Kyiv, Ukrainian officials said on Sunday.
According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, two high-rise residential buildings were damaged during the assault, though it remains unclear whether they were directly struck or hit by falling debris.
“Everyone is receiving medical assistance, some have been hospitalised,” Kyiv’s military administration confirmed in a post on Telegram.
Meanwhile, Russian officials reported that air defences intercepted a drone approaching Moscow, according to the city’s mayor, Sergei Sobyanin.
The renewed strikes came as US President Donald Trump said he would only meet Russian President Vladimir Putin if there was a clear path to reaching a peace agreement, following the collapse of plans for a meeting in Budapest.
“I’ve always had a great relationship with Vladimir Putin, but this has been very disappointing,” Trump said aboard Air Force One as he departed for a week-long trip to Asia. He added that he hoped China would assist in efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
Trump is expected to meet Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea on Thursday. The US president has made ending the Russia-Ukraine conflict a central goal of his administration, though a ceasefire deal remains elusive despite months of negotiations.
A summit between Trump and Putin in August yielded no breakthrough, and the US president has since expressed growing frustration with Moscow’s stance.
Senior Russian envoy Kirill Dmitriev, who recently met US officials in Washington, told CNN that he believed the parties were “reasonably close to a diplomatic solution,” referencing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s recent comments suggesting current battle lines could serve as a starting point for peace talks.
Earlier this week, Trump announced new sanctions on Russia’s two largest oil companies, Rosneft and Lukoil, as part of efforts to pressure Moscow towards negotiations.
