4 Wolves Found Dead in Italian Alps, Poisoning Suspected
Authorities in northern Italy are investigating the suspected poisoning of four wolves whose bodies were discovered near a cycle path in the Trentino province over the weekend.
Veterinarians are set to examine the carcasses to determine the exact cause of death, officials reported on Monday.
In a related case, authorities in neighboring South Tyrol province suspect a she-wolf that died in September was also poisoned, though final confirmation is still pending. An investigation has been launched into both incidents.
The suspected poisonings come amid growing tensions over the increasing presence of wolves and bears in northern Italy’s woodlands. Some residents, particularly those in tourism-dependent areas, argue that the predators pose risks to people and livestock.
Trentino councilor Roberto Failoni condemned the killings as “illegal poaching,” warning that the use of poison endangers not just wildlife but also domestic animals, including dogs.
