The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has confirmed that six people died and 25 others sustained injuries in a multiple-vehicle crash under the Karu Bridge in Abuja on Wednesday evening.
FRSC Public Education Officer, Olusegun Ogungbemide, stated that the crash, which occurred at around 6:58 p.m., involved 18 vehicles, including two articulated trucks, two buses, one jeep, and 11 cars. He attributed the accident to brake failure, which triggered a chain collision, with some vehicles catching fire.
Emergency responders, including the FRSC, Red Cross, Fire Service, and military, arrived swiftly to assist the victims. “The crash resulted in six fatalities, with four bodies burned beyond recognition, while 25 others were injured,” Ogungbemide said.
The injured victims were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment, while the deceased were taken to the mortuary.
Senior FRSC officials, including the FCT Sector Commander, Chorrie Muta’a, and the Unit Commander in charge of Nyanya and Karu, coordinated rescue efforts at the scene. FRSC Corps Marshal Malam Shehu Mohammed also visited the crash site to assess the damage and sympathize with the victims’ families.
Ogungbemide urged drivers to conduct regular vehicle maintenance and safety checks to prevent such tragedies. He reiterated the FRSC’s commitment to road safety through enforcement, public awareness campaigns, and collaboration with other agencies to reduce traffic accidents.
