Former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Warns Against Rushed Peace Deal Favoring Putin

In a recent interview, former Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba cautioned against entering into a premature peace agreement with Russia, asserting that a poorly negotiated deal would serve as a victory for Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Kuleba highlighted the risks associated with expedited negotiations, suggesting that they could lead to concessions detrimental to Ukraine’s sovereignty and territorial integrity. He emphasized that any agreement should not compromise Ukraine’s core interests or reward Russian aggression.

This perspective aligns with previous statements from other Ukrainian officials. For instance, in July 2024, a top adviser to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described signing an agreement with Russia as akin to making a “deal with the devil,” underscoring the deep mistrust toward Moscow’s intentions.

The former minister’s remarks come amid ongoing discussions about potential pathways to end the conflict, with various international actors proposing negotiations. However, Ukrainian leadership remains steadfast in their position that any peace deal must ensure the full restoration of Ukraine’s territorial integrity and not legitimize Russia’s territorial gains achieved through military aggression.

Kuleba’s warning serves as a reminder of the complexities involved in negotiating peace and the importance of ensuring that any agreement upholds Ukraine’s sovereignty and long-term security interests.
