More than 600 athletes from six South-West states will participate in the zonal elimination competition for the upcoming National Sports Festival (NSF), the South-West Zonal Director of the National Sports Commission (NSC), Evelyn Fabunmi, has announced.
Speaking in Ibadan on Tuesday, Fabunmi said the competition would take place at two venues—the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium and Ilaji Sports Resort.
“The event will be held simultaneously across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones and will feature eight ball games,” she said.
She listed the games as basketball, hockey, cricket, football, handball, volleyball, abula, and beach volleyball.
Fabunmi noted that each of the six participating states—Ogun, Osun, Ekiti, Oyo, Lagos, and Ondo—would present athletes in all eight games during the competition, scheduled to run from Sunday to Feb. 28.
She added that cricket, football, and basketball would be played at the Obafemi Awolowo Stadium, while Ilaji Sports Resort would host hockey, volleyball, abula, handball, and beach volleyball.
The tournament will begin with technical meetings to determine fixtures and schedules, including arrangements for the opening ceremony at Ilaji Sports Resort.
Winners and runners-up in each game will qualify for the 22nd National Sports Festival, tagged “2024 Gateway Games,” set to take place in Ogun from May 16 to May 30.
