ECOWAS Defence Chiefs Urge Reintegration of Mali, Burkina Faso, and Niger

The Chiefs of Defence Staff from West African nations have called for the swift reintegration of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso into the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), stressing the importance of regional unity in combating insecurity.

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, who also serves as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Committee of Defence Chiefs, made this appeal during a visit to the National Counter-Terrorism Centre (NCTC) in Abuja on Friday, alongside his West African counterparts.

Musa emphasized that the return of these three nations to ECOWAS is crucial in the collective effort to tackle the growing threats of insurgency and other forms of insecurity plaguing the region.

“Without security, there can be no progress, and the threats we face, particularly from insurgency, are severe. It is vital that we partner together to achieve success. No country can do it alone,” Musa said.

He highlighted ongoing efforts to bring Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso back into the fold, warning that their continued isolation could have detrimental effects on the entire region. “If they fall, it will
