The Edo State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has applauded the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for swiftly arresting Kelly Okungbowa, also known as Ebo Stone, over alleged abuse of the Naira.
Okungbowa, the suspended coordinator of the Edo State Public Safety Response Team (PSRT), was taken into custody after a viral video showed him spraying Naira notes on exotic dancers at a bar on March 9, sparking public outrage.
In a statement, Chris Nehikhare, the Publicity Secretary of the Edo PDP Caretaker Committee, called for a thorough investigation and prosecution of Okungbowa in line with the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) Act of 2007, which criminalizes the spraying, stepping on, or mishandling of the national currency.
“The swift action by the EFCC sends a strong message that such irresponsible behavior will not be tolerated, regardless of the perpetrator’s position or influence,” Nehikhare stated.
He urged the EFCC to reinforce the seriousness of Naira abuse offences and ensure strict enforcement of the law.
