Brothers Nabbed with 5kg Cocaine at Lagos Airport En Route to India

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested two brothers, John Abugu, 43, and Kenneth Abugu, 31, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Ikeja, Lagos, for attempting to smuggle five kilograms of cocaine to India.

The suspects were apprehended on Thursday, April 3, 2025, during a clearance operation following actionable intelligence. According to Femi Babafemi, NDLEA’s Director of Media and Advocacy, the cocaine was concealed in the walls of the suspects’ suitcases. The duo had claimed they were traveling for medical treatment.

In a related operation on the same day, NDLEA officers intercepted a Ghanaian-British national, Parker Darren Hazekia Osei, 20, with 36 parcels of Loud, a potent strain of cannabis, weighing 19.40 kilograms. Osei, who claimed to be a Computer Science student at East London University, was arrested on arrival from Bangkok via Ethiopian Airlines.

In Kogi State, a 33-year-old woman, Ngozi Ogili, was caught with 3kg of methamphetamine on March 31 while traveling from Lagos to Abuja. A follow-up raid in Abuja’s Apo mechanic area uncovered more Loud and Colorado, both synthetic cannabis variants.

Elsewhere, a 75-year-old man, Nna Nnanna Felix, was arrested in Abia State with 1.6kg of skunk, while a separate operation led to the arrest of 21-year-old David Chinemerem with 2,050 ampoules of pentazocine in Aba.

In Yobe State, operatives intercepted Abdullahi Adamu with 381 bottles of codeine syrup and 108 tramadol tablets. Simultaneous raids in Anambra led to the arrest of Obinna Sunday and Ugochukwu Ojalanonye, with over 195,000 tramadol pills, 4.2kg of codeine syrup, and 5.4kg of pentazocine seized.

In Abuja, 51-year-old Sunday Ayogu was arrested with 25kg of skunk and 90.4g of methamphetamine during a raid at Wuse Market. Meanwhile, two women—Faith Effiong Etim, 64, and Victoria Asuquo Etim, 40—were arrested in Cross River State after NDLEA and the Nigerian Army destroyed over 100 hectares of cannabis farms in Esuk-Odot, Odukpani LGA.

NDLEA Chairman/CEO, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.), lauded the agency’s operatives across the states for their coordinated efforts, emphasizing their commitment to both drug supply and demand reduction strategies.
