Half of Indian Workers Want to Quit Jobs Amid Rising Daily Stress, Gallup Finds
Nearly half of India’s workforce is actively looking to leave their jobs, with 30% experiencing daily stress and 34% frequently feeling anger, according to Gallup’s State of the Global Workplace 2025 Report.
The report paints a bleak picture of employee well-being in India and across South Asia, which includes Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan. The region recorded the world’s lowest percentage of thriving employees and the highest levels of daily negative emotions.
In India, workplace dissatisfaction is sharply rising. Gallup attributed the surge in stress and discontent to factors such as heavy workloads, poor managerial support, and uninspiring work environments. Employee engagement — a key indicator of job satisfaction and productivity — dropped from 33% in 2023 to 30% in 2024.
Globally, employee engagement also declined, contributing to an estimated $438 billion in lost productivity. But the Indian workforce is among the hardest hit, with almost 50% of employees seeking new opportunities due to burnout, lack of recognition, and weak leadership.
Gallup’s findings signal an urgent need for Indian employers to rethink workplace culture and leadership strategies. Without swift action, companies risk losing top talent and further eroding morale.
