A 52-year-old South Carolina man, Eric Slate, was found dead inside an animal enclosure at a petting zoo following a suspected fatal attack by a kangaroo. The tragic incident occurred at 5-Star Farm, located near Highway 746 in Loris, on the evening of Friday, May 9.

According to the Horry County Police Department, Slate’s body was discovered inside an enclosure that housed wallabies and kangaroos of various ages. An autopsy confirmed that he died from multiple blunt force injuries. Authorities believe a kangaroo, reportedly named Mr. Jack, was directly involved in the deadly encounter.

Slate was said to be a relative of the farm’s owner. Local councilman Dennis DiSabato confirmed to News 13 that the incident occurred between the adult victim and a non-domesticated animal within the pen. All animals on the property have since been secured and pose no threat to the public, police assured.

The petting zoo had previously posted about Mr. Jack on social media, describing him as friendly and fond of neck scratches and hand-fed treats. It remains unclear why Slate entered the enclosure or what triggered the kangaroo’s aggression.

As of now, authorities have not announced any legal action or provided updates on the animals’ future. Investigations into the incident are ongoing.
