Renowned Nigerian highlife icon, Mike Ejeagha, has died at the age of 95. He passed away on the evening of Friday, June 6, 2025, at the 32 Garrison Hospital in Enugu after battling a prolonged illness.
Ejeagha was celebrated for his masterful use of Igbo folklore, proverbs, and storytelling in music, which earned him a revered place in Nigeria’s cultural and musical history. His distinctive style dominated the airwaves in the 1980s and continued to influence generations of artists and listeners.
In July 2024, the veteran musician gained fresh recognition online after comedian Brain Jotter featured one of his songs in a viral dance challenge. The trend, driven by a humorous dance routine set to the catchy chorus “Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo,” brought Ejeagha’s work to the attention of younger audiences and sparked renewed appreciation for traditional Igbo music.
The song, which tells the tale of a clever tortoise outwitting an elephant, became a cultural touchstone once again, highlighting Ejeagha’s ability to blend wisdom and wit through music.
In September 2024, Enugu State Governor Peter Mbah paid tribute to the artist by visiting him, renaming the street leading to his residence in his honour, and pledging to cover his medical expenses.
Mike Ejeagha leaves behind a lasting legacy as a custodian of oral tradition and a voice that bridged generations through music.
May his soul rest in peace.
