NiMet Forecasts Thunderstorms, Sunshine Across Nigeria from Friday to Sunday
The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has issued a three-day weather forecast predicting a mix of thunderstorms and sunshine across different parts of the country from Friday to Sunday.
In a weather outlook released Thursday in Abuja, NiMet said parts of the northern region should expect light to moderate rainfall on Friday morning, particularly in Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Jigawa, and Bauchi states. Other northern states will experience sunny skies with patches of cloud, while thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are likely later in the afternoon and evening.
For the central region, the forecast shows mostly sunny skies with cloud patches during the morning. However, thunderstorms and moderate rainfall are anticipated by afternoon or evening in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, Niger, and Plateau states.
In the south, cloudy skies will prevail in the morning, with light rainfall expected over Rivers, Cross River, and Akwa Ibom states. NiMet projects that moderate rainfall will spread across the region as the day progresses.
NiMet forecasts sunny skies with some cloud cover in the northern region during the morning, with isolated thunderstorms and light rainfall in Adamawa, Taraba, Jigawa, Bauchi, Borno, Katsina, Zamfara, Yobe, and Kaduna. Later in the day, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in Sokoto, Kebbi, Kano, and other surrounding states.
The central region may experience light morning rain in Niger and Plateau, followed by afternoon and evening thunderstorms in the FCT, Nasarawa, Kogi, Kwara, Benue, and Plateau.
Southern states such as Abia, Ebonyi, Ogun, Ondo, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa may experience morning rain, with heavier rainfall forecast for the afternoon and evening.
Sunday Outlook:
On Sunday, thunderstorms with moderate rain are expected in Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, and Kaduna during the morning hours, with sunny intervals in other northern areas. Afternoon and evening thunderstorms are likely in Kebbi, Zamfara, Adamawa, Taraba, Kaduna, Borno, and Yobe.
Cloudy skies are predicted over the central region in the morning, with possible thunderstorms and rain later in the day in the FCT, Benue, Nasarawa, Kwara, Niger, and Plateau.
Morning showers are likely in parts of Ondo, Edo, Ogun, Cross River, Bayelsa, and Akwa Ibom in the south, with moderate to heavy rainfall expected in the afternoon and evening.
NiMet warned that strong winds may precede the thunderstorms and urged the public to take safety precautions.
“Ensure loose objects are secured, avoid driving in heavy rain, disconnect electrical appliances, and stay away from tall trees,” the agency advised.
Airline operators were also urged to obtain airport-specific weather reports for effective planning, while the public is encouraged to follow NiMet’s updates through its official platforms.
