Dealers Slash Cooking Gas Prices, Report Reveals Cheapest States for 12.5kg and 5kg Refills
Cooking gas prices in Nigeria have significantly dropped, with the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) reporting that the average price for refilling a 5kg Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) cylinder decreased to N5,974.55 in July 2024. This represents a 14.23% reduction from June’s average price of N6,966.03. However, on a year-on-year basis, the price for 5kg refills has increased by 46.69% compared to N4,072.87 in July 2023.
The cost to refill a 12.5kg LPG cylinder also fell, with Nigerians paying an average of N14,261.57 in July 2024, 9.37% lower than the N15,736.27 recorded in June 2024. Yet, the year-on-year comparison reveals a 55.66% rise from N9,162.11 in July 2023.
According to the NBS report, states with the highest average price for 5kg refills in July 2024 included Borno (N7,088.59), Yobe (N6,935.50), and Sokoto (N6,750.00), while Delta (N5,392.86), Zamfara (N5,431.25), and Kogi (N5,560.63) had the lowest.
For 12.5kg refills, Gombe topped the list with N15,872.22, followed by Yobe (N15,823.32) and Taraba (N15,625.00). Kwara (N13,314.47), Enugu (N13,411.39), and Nassarawa (N13,413.81) recorded the lowest average prices.
The NBS figures offer some relief for Nigerian households, who have faced significant increases in energy costs over the past year.
