Two domestic staff, Sarah James, 28, and Jacob Dauda, 32, on Thursday appeared before a Kaduna Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing their employer’s property worth N2.3 million.

The defendants, both residents of Mahuta, Kaduna, are facing two counts of conspiracy and stealing.

They, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

The Prosecutor, Insp. Chidi Leo, told the court that the defendants committed the offences on July 10 at Barnawa, Kaduna.

Leo alleged that the defendants stole some jewellery, two television sets, four ceiling fans, six pairs of shoes, and some foodstuffs.

He told the court that the stolen items all valued at N2.2 million, belonged to their employer, Mrs Charity Musa.

According to him, the defendants took advantage of their employer’s absence from Kaduna to perpetrate the act.

The prosecutor stated that the offences contravened Sections 58 and 217 of the Kaduna State Penal Code, 2017.

“Section 58 stipulates two years imprisonment for conspiracy if found guilty while Section 217 stipulates seven years jail term if found guilty for stealing.

The Magistrate, Ibrahim Emmanuel, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N200,000 each with two sureties, who must be gainfully employed.

Emmanuel ordered that the sureties must reside within the court’s jurisdiction and present evidence of tax payment to the Kaduna State Government for the past three years as part of the bail conditions.

The magistrate adjourned the case until Aug. 21 for hearing.
