The police on Friday arraigned two men — Adebiyi Temitope, 40, and Bamisaye Bankole, 47 — before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly defrauding a woman of N2.5 million and converting the money to personal use.

The defendants, whose residential addresses were not provided, are facing a two-count charge bordering on fraud and fraudulent conversion of funds.

Prosecutor Insp. Akinwale Oriyomi told the court that the offence was committed on April 2 in Ado-Ekiti.

He alleged that the defendants obtained N2.5 million from the complainant, Iyanu Oluwande, under the pretext of selling her two plots of land — a claim they knew was false.

Oriyomi further alleged that the defendants fraudulently converted the money to their personal use without providing the said plots of land.

According to him, the offences contravene Sections 329(3) and 302(1) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.

The prosecutor requested an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.

The defendants pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Defence counsel, Mr. J.J. Tijani, urged the court to grant bail to the defendants, assuring that they would not jump bail.

Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun granted each of the defendants bail in the sum of N250,000, with one surety in like sum, and adjourned the case to September 30 for hearing.
