Super Eagles head coach Eric Chelle has revealed that he took a pay cut to lead the Nigerian national team, insisting that his decision was driven by ambition, not financial gain.

In an interview with journalist Osasu Obayiuwana, Chelle said his passion for the project and belief in the team’s potential were the key reasons behind his move to Nigeria.

“When I came to Nigeria, I didn’t come here because of money. I was earning more in my last job,” Chelle said. “I came here because this is a very big team and I want to prove something, to achieve something. I came here for the challenge. Nothing has changed about that.”

The 46-year-old coach is currently facing mounting pressure as the Super Eagles fight to secure qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Nigeria’s next two fixtures—against Rwanda in Uyo and a critical clash away in South Africa—could determine Chelle’s future with the team.

Despite the uncertainty, the former Mali coach remains focused and unfazed.

“I know quite well that I can be fired after one match. This is life in football,” he said. “But if they decide to do that, they must be prepared to pay the remainder of my contract.”

Chelle’s comments come amid growing speculation about his job security as fans and stakeholders demand improved performances from the national side.
