FG Hails Finland Over Simon Ekpa’s Terrorism Conviction
The Federal Government has lauded the Finnish judiciary following the conviction of Simon Ekpa, a pro-Biafra separatist, who was sentenced to six years in prison on Monday by the Päijät-Häme District Court in Finland for terrorism-related offences.
Describing the verdict as a “watershed moment,” the government said the ruling not only affirms the global fight against terrorism but also strengthens diplomatic relations between Nigeria and Finland.
Ekpa, who gained notoriety for inciting violence through separatist propaganda and alleged orchestration of terror activities linked to IPOB, has long been accused by Nigerian authorities of fueling unrest, particularly in the South-East region.
“For years, his actions brought unspeakable suffering — families torn apart, businesses destroyed, communities terrorized, and lives lost — all in pursuit of a lawless agenda aimed at destabilizing our nation,” the statement read.
According to the government, the Finnish court’s decision underscores the international community’s growing intolerance for extremism and affirms Nigeria’s longstanding position on Ekpa’s conduct.
“By upholding the rule of law, Finland has demonstrated that justice knows no borders. Those who seek to sow chaos through terror will be held accountable, wherever they may be,” it stated.
The Tinubu-led administration reaffirmed its commitment to defending Nigeria’s sovereignty and protecting the lives and rights of all citizens, noting that diplomatic, military, and legal tools will continue to be deployed to maintain peace and unity.
The government also issued a strong call to armed agitators still operating under Ekpa’s influence: “Lay down your arms. Violence and division offer no future. Nigeria is vast enough for all its people, but there is no progress without peace.”
Appreciation was extended to key national security stakeholders, including the Office of the National Security Adviser, the Nigerian Armed Forces, intelligence agencies, the Federal Ministry of Justice, and the Nigeria Police Force, for their tireless efforts in safeguarding the country.
“Their courage, professionalism, and sacrifice—alongside the resilience of the Nigerian people—remain the backbone of our national unity,” the statement concluded.
