TikToker Jailed Over False HIV Claim Against Dayo Amusa Recounts Ordeal in Police Cell
Content creator Olaoluwa Segun, who was jailed for falsely claiming that Nollywood actress Dayo Amusa was living with HIV, has shared details of his traumatic experience in detention.
The controversy began in July after Segun posted a video alleging that Amusa and other Nollywood stars were HIV positive. Amusa later clarified that she had only participated in an HIV awareness campaign in 2019 and vowed to make Segun a “scapegoat” to discourage the spread of false information.
In a recent Instagram video, Segun narrated his two-day stay at Panti Police Station in Yaba, Lagos, describing it as the worst experience of his life after losing his mother.
“I was locked up for two days in Yaba. When I entered the cell, one rugged-looking guy told me to prostrate and greet them. The cell had no furniture, only four pit latrines with no doors, and an open window where mosquitoes kept coming in. You are literally sleeping in a toilet,” he recounted.
Segun said he was considered “lucky” to be kept in a cell with a surveillance camera, which prevented inmates from beating him. He added that one of the cell leaders recognized him from TikTok and offered him protection.
“We were about 60 people in one cell. Everyone slept on cold tiles while mosquitoes bit them. The leaders slept on broken bunk beds. Luckily, the person who knew me gave me a smelly, old bed to sleep on,” he said.
Expressing gratitude to Amusa, Segun admitted he could have spent much longer behind bars if she had not decided to forgive him.
“I want to thank Aunty Dayo Amusa for forgiving me. I don’t pray to ever sleep in a cell again,” he said.
