Gov. Abba Kabir-Yusuf of Kano State on Thursday presented permanent appointment letters to 4,315 former Better Education Service Delivery for All (BESDA) teachers.

He said the teachers, under the BESDA scheme, had successfully completed their internship and were now being absorbed into the state civil service.

The governor described the exercise as a milestone in his administration’s efforts to transform education, which he called the foundation of human and societal development.

“This is not just a ceremony but a testament to our unwavering belief that education is the bedrock of our people’s progress.

“As you are inducted into this noble profession, I urge you to teach with passion, serve with integrity, and dedicate yourselves to nurturing the minds and shaping the character of our children,” he said.

The governor also announced plans to recruit an additional 2,616 qualified teachers to strengthen the state’s education system.

According to him, his administration has promoted thousands of staff, invested heavily in teachers’ welfare, and disbursed N200 million under the teachers’ loan scheme to cushion financial burdens.

He added that the government had embarked on rehabilitation of schools, construction of new ones, and distribution of books and learning materials across the 44 local government areas.

Other interventions include the provision of 440 motorcycles and 300 tablet computers to school support officers to enhance supervision and productivity.

Kabir-Yusuf also announced the reopening and upgrading of some Schools to boarding.

On school security, Kabir-Yusuf directed councils across the state to recruit 17,000 watchmen for basic and post-basic schools.

He noted that Kano emerged as the best-performing state in the 2025 Senior Secondary Certificate Examination (SSCE) conducted by NECO, with 68,159 candidates recording at least five credits, including English and Mathematics.

“This historic achievement is a direct result of the sweeping reforms and sustained investments in the education sector,” he said.

He commended the NUT, UBEC, CSOs and other donor agencies for their support, assuring that his administration would remain resolute in restoring the glory of the state’s education sector.

Earlier, the SUBEB Chairman, Alhaji Yusuf Kabir, commended the governor for prioritising education, noting that the sector had consistently received the highest budgetary allocation in the last two years.

Also, the Commissioner for Education, Dr Haruna Ali Makoda, praised the governor for Kano’s recent success in NECO, stressing the importance of teachers, teaching materials and infrastructure as key pillars of quality education.

The UBEC Executive Secretary, Dr Aisha Garba, represented by the Zonal Director (North-West), Hajiya Sidikat Shomope, described Kano’s absorption of the BESDA teachers as a landmark move to address teacher shortages, urging other states to emulate it.

Garba appealed for the deployment of new teachers to rural and underserved communities and stressed the need for continuous recruitment and training.
