A 15-year-old student, Mohammed Umar Khan, has been sentenced to a minimum of 16 years in prison for the fatal stabbing of his schoolmate, Harvey Willgoose, at All Saints Catholic High School in Sheffield.

The tragic incident occurred during lunch break on February 3, 2025, when Khan brought a hunting knife to school and stabbed Harvey in the heart in front of shocked pupils. Some students fled in panic, while others locked themselves in classrooms during the attack.

Khan, who was convicted of murder in August, can now be identified after a Sheffield Crown Court judge, Mrs Justice Ellenbogen, lifted a previous order protecting his identity. The decision followed applications from several media organisations, including the PA news agency.

During Wednesday’s sentencing, Justice Ellenbogen told Khan:

“You were the aggressor and acted in hurt and anger at what you considered to be his betrayal of your friendship.”

She added that the public had a right to know the identity of a child who committed such a serious offence on school grounds, noting:

“This was a serious crime carried out by one pupil on another on school property with a knife he brought into school.”

Harvey’s parents, Mark and Caroline Willgoose, along with his sister Sophie, were present in court. In an emotional statement, Sophie said her family continues to struggle with the loss of her brother.

“This was not just a crime against my brother, it was a crime against all of us who loved him,” she said. “The pain will remain with us for the rest of our lives. The defendant didn’t just end Harvey’s life — he ended ours too.”

Khan, who turns 16 next month, will serve at least 16 years before being eligible for parole.
