Algerian Fuel Shipment Arrives in Lebanon to Address Severe Shortage
An Algerian ship carrying 30,000 metric tonnes of fuel has arrived in Lebanon, marking a significant aid effort to alleviate the country’s ongoing fuel crisis. Acting Energy Minister Walid Fayad confirmed that the tanker docked off the coast of Tripoli’s oil facilities in northern Lebanon.
The fuel shipment, a gift from the Algerian government, is expected to help Lebanon’s power plants resume operations. Fayad anticipates that the electricity supply will increase from four to six hours per day by Thursday.
Lebanon’s power grid faced a complete shutdown in mid-August due to fuel shortages, forcing the state-owned Electricité Du Liban to halt operations after depleting its reserves. This has compounded the country’s long-standing electricity issues, exacerbated by an economic crisis that began in 2019. The electricity supply has been sporadic, often limited to just two hours a day, with many residents relying on diesel generators to bridge the gaps.
