Māori King Kiingi Tuheitia Dies at Age 69

New Zealand’s Māori King, Kiingi Tuheitia Pootatau Te Wherowhero VII, has passed away at age 69, just days after commemorating his 18th year as king. Kiingi Tuheitia, who was the seventh monarch of the Kiingitanga movement, died in a hospital following heart surgery, as confirmed by Rahui Papa, a spokesperson for the Māori King Movement.

The Kiingitanga movement was established in 1858 to unite Māori tribes against British colonization. While his role was largely ceremonial, Tuheitia played a significant part in preserving Māori culture and advocating for Indigenous rights. Approximately 20% of New Zealand’s population identifies as Māori.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon paid tribute, highlighting Tuheitia’s dedication to Aotearoa New Zealand and his passion for the future of the Māori people. King Charles III and Queen Camilla also expressed their deep sorrow, praising Tuheitia’s wisdom and commitment to unity and healing.

Thousands gathered at Turangawaewae Marae the week before his death for annual celebrations of his ascension. Tuheitia is expected to lie in state at Turangawaewae Marae before his burial at Taupiri Mountain. The next successor to the throne has yet to be announced.
