Egyptian Officials to Oversee Nigeria vs Benin AFCON Qualifier in 2025
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has appointed Egyptian referee Amin Omar to officiate the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying match between Nigeria’s Super Eagles and the Cheetahs of Benin Republic. The game is set to take place at the Godswill Akpabio Stadium in Uyo.
In a statement on Friday, Ademola Olajire, Director of Communications at the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), confirmed that the match will kick off at 5 p.m. Nigerian time.
Omar will be supported by fellow Egyptians Mahmoud Abouelregal (Assistant Referee 1), Ahmad Hossam Taha (Assistant Referee 2), and Ahmed ElGhandour (Fourth Official). The match marks the debut of Super Eagles’ head coach Bruno Labbadia.
CAF has also designated Ghanaian Munkaila Adam as the match commissioner, Senegal’s Fatou Gaye as referee assessor, and Ivorian Atte Claude Elloh as the security officer.
Nigeria is in Group D for the 2025 AFCON qualifiers alongside Benin, Libya, and Rwanda. The tournament is set to take place from Dec. 21, 2025, to Jan. 18, 2026, in Morocco, marking the first time the competition will span the Christmas and New Year periods.
