Benin Monarch Honors Rema with Royal Plaque at Palace

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has honored Afrobeats sensation, Rema, with a royal plaque during a visit to the palace. The presentation took place on Thursday, ahead of Rema’s homecoming concert at Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.

The day prior, Rema had participated in the groundbreaking ceremony of the Edo Arena alongside Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki. The governor revealed that the 6,000-capacity arena would be named Rema Dome in recognition of the artist’s contributions to the state.

Governor Obaseki praised Rema as a proud ambassador of Benin and Edo State. He emphasized that the Rema Dome would serve as a major attraction, drawing international visitors and stars to the region and boosting its tourism sector.

In a post on his X handle, the governor stated, “It was a pleasure to have our global music icon, @heisrema, join me in performing the groundbreaking ceremony for the 6,000-capacity Edo Arena, now named ‘Rema’s Dome.'”

Obaseki highlighted that the new arena, located at the former Garrick Memorial School Ground on Ekenhuan Road, would showcase Edo’s rich cultural heritage and create employment opportunities for the youth.

Rema, born Divine Ikubor, has long been an ambassador of his hometown, using his platform to celebrate the legacy of the ancient Benin Empire through his music and performances.
