Severe flooding caused by relentless rainfall has forced mass evacuations across the U.S. state of Washington, with authorities warning that the situation has reached unprecedented levels.

Washington Governor Bob Ferguson on Thursday urged residents in high-risk areas to evacuate immediately and comply with directives from emergency officials. Authorities estimate that up to 100,000 people are currently affected by evacuation orders.

“I understand that many in our state have experienced significant floods in the past,” Ferguson wrote on X. “However, we’re looking at a historic situation, expecting water levels to rise 2 feet [61 cm] above previous records.”

More than 30 major highways have been shut down, leaving several communities cut off. Ferguson has declared a statewide emergency to enable rapid deployment of funds, equipment, and additional response personnel.

The National Guard has been mobilized to support rescue efforts, using helicopters and boats to evacuate stranded residents. Numerous rivers have burst their banks, submerging towns, homes, and farmland under rising waters.

Meteorologists say the torrential downpour is being fueled by an “atmospheric river” — a stream of highly moisture-laden air capable of unleashing intense rainfall over prolonged periods.

Rescue operations are ongoing as weather conditions continue to pose significant risks.
