Chaos in Kolkata as fans storm stadium after Messi’s brief appearance

Scenes of disorder erupted at a stadium in Kolkata, eastern India, after football icon Lionel Messi made a short and unexpected exit from a highly anticipated public event, leaving thousands of fans frustrated and angry.

Messi, who is in India on a three-day “GOAT Tour,” arrived in the eastern state of West Bengal early Saturday to an enthusiastic welcome from supporters chanting his name. Later in the day, Salt Lake Stadium in Kolkata was filled with fans wearing Argentina jerseys and waving flags, many hoping for a close view of the global star.

However, heavy security restrictions and Messi’s early departure from the venue meant large sections of the crowd barely saw him. After briefly walking around the pitch and waving to supporters, the 38-year-old Inter Miami and Argentina forward left the stadium earlier than expected.

The situation quickly spiralled out of control. Angry spectators broke barricades, stormed the pitch, ripped out seats and hurled water bottles. Banners and tents were vandalised as frustration mounted among fans, many of whom had paid premium prices for tickets.

“For me, watching Messi is a dream, but I couldn’t even catch a glimpse because of the mismanagement,” said Nabin Chatterjee, a 37-year-old businessman, speaking to AFP.

Before the unrest, Messi unveiled a 21-metre statue depicting him lifting the World Cup. He was also expected to feature in a short exhibition match, which did not take place.

Another fan told the Press Trust of India that people had spent “a month’s salary” to attend the event. Ajay Shah, who attended with his son, said organisers were to blame, accusing security personnel of focusing on taking selfies instead of crowd control.

Senior police official Javed Shamim confirmed that the event’s chief organiser had been arrested and said authorities were assessing options to refund ticket buyers. He added that the situation had since been brought under control.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee apologised to Messi and fans, describing the incident as “disturbing” and “shocking,” and announced a probe into the mismanagement.

The All India Football Federation distanced itself from the event, stating it had no role in its organisation and that no clearance had been sought.

Messi is scheduled to continue his India tour with stops in Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi, where he may also meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
