129 Dead, 59 Injured in Congo Prison Break Attempt

At least 129 people were killed in an attempted prison break at Makala prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo, according to Congolese Interior Minister Jacquemain Shabani.

In a statement on his X account, Shabani revealed that security forces shot 24 inmates, while many others suffocated or were trampled during the chaos that unfolded late Monday night. The minister also confirmed reports of sexual violence, stating that female prisoners were raped during the incident.

A total of 59 people were injured, with the police and army eventually bringing the situation under control. The full extent of the damage is still being assessed, as administrative buildings, the infirmary, and a food depot were completely destroyed by fire.

An emergency meeting was convened by security forces on Tuesday to address the case, as prison breaks remain a common occurrence in the conflict-ridden country, often leading to mass escapes.
