Panic has gripped Kurgi community in Mariga Local Government Area of Niger State following an alleged aerial attack that reportedly left at least two people dead and several others injured.

Residents said the incident occurred on Sunday afternoon, triggering fear and confusion in the area and forcing many villagers to flee their homes.

Eyewitnesses told newsmen that a surveillance helicopter, believed to be operated by the Nigerian Air Force, flew into the community and hovered for several minutes before allegedly opening fire. According to locals, the gunshots struck residents who were going about their normal activities, with women and children reportedly among those affected.

Community members said the sudden gunfire caused widespread panic as people scrambled for safety. Several residents reportedly sustained gunshot wounds, while two victims were later confirmed dead.

The incident is said to have prompted a mass movement of residents out of Kurgi, with many fleeing to neighbouring communities, including Bangi town, in search of safety. As of Tuesday, fear reportedly remains high in the area, with many families yet to return to their homes.

A resident, Sulaiman Sanusi, described the incident as “shocking and unprovoked,” and called on the relevant authorities to urgently investigate the circumstances surrounding the alleged attack.
