I-G Unveils New Standard Uniforms for Supernumerary Police Officers
The Inspector-General of Police (I-G), Mr. Olukayode Egbetokun, has introduced new standardised uniforms for Supernumerary Police (SPY) officers, mandating strict adherence by organisations utilising their services.
Represented by Deputy Inspector-General of Police, Bala Ciroma, Egbetokun made the announcement during the unveiling ceremony in Abuja on Tuesday.
He emphasized that all organisations employing SPY personnel must comply with the new uniform regulations. “The Force Quartermaster and personnel across the states will provide guidance on the registration and acquisition,” he said, adding that police training schools would now adopt the new uniform issuance model for SPY officers.
The move aims to enhance the professionalism and visibility of SPY officers, while also curbing unauthorised production and distribution of police uniforms.
The I-G highlighted the significance of this development as a step towards solidifying the identity of the SPY unit, which had faced challenges due to the lack of a distinctive uniform.
Egbetokun noted that Section 21(7) of the Nigeria Police Act 2020 (as amended) formally establishes the SPY Police as an integral part of the Nigeria Police Force, defining their powers, privileges, and responsibilities.
He further encouraged private organisations and government departments seeking SPY services for property protection to submit applications to the I-G for approval.
