JAMB: UTME 2026 registration closes Feb 28 – Key mistakes to avoid

0 39

‍With the February 28, 2026 deadline for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) fast approaching, candidates have been advised to complete their registration early and carefully to avoid costly errors that could affect their admission chances.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has repeatedly warned that mistakes made during registration can lead to disqualification, denial of entry into the examination hall, or serious verification problems during the admission process.

Education experts note that many candidates lose admission opportunities each year, not because of low scores, but due to avoidable registration errors.

Here are the common mistakes candidates are urged to avoid:

Wrong subject combinations

Candidates must select subjects that align strictly with their chosen course of study and institution. Wrong combinations automatically disqualify candidates from admission, regardless of UTME scores. For example, engineering courses require Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics.

Registration at unauthorised CBT centres

Only JAMB-accredited CBT centres are permitted to register candidates. Registering at unapproved centres — even if cheaper — can lead to invalidation of the registration. Candidates are advised to confirm approved centres through JAMB’s official channels.

Incorrect O’level results

Candidates with results must enter correct grades and examination numbers. Those awaiting results should select the “awaiting result” option. Guessing or entering wrong details can lead to verification failures during admission processing.

Biometric failure

Biometric capture is compulsory for UTME. Incomplete or failed fingerprint capture can lead to denial of access to the examination hall. Candidates must ensure their biometrics are properly captured during registration.

Failure to verify course and institution

Candidates are advised to confirm that their chosen institution offers their selected course and that they meet the institution’s specific requirements before selecting first and second choices.

NIN data mismatch

All personal details on a candidate’s National Identification Number (NIN) must match their O’level records. Any mismatch in name order, spelling or date of birth should be corrected at NIMC before registration.

Use of old emails or phone numbers

JAMB requires fresh email addresses and phone numbers for each UTME registration. Reusing previous details or using family members’ contacts can cause system rejection. Candidates are advised to create new email accounts and use new phone numbers.

Poor quality passport photograph

A clear, recent passport photograph is required for UTME registration and will be used throughout a candidate’s academic records. Blurry or old photos may lead to document rejection or identity verification issues.

Candidates are encouraged to complete their registration early, verify all details carefully, and use only official JAMB channels to ensure a smooth UTME 2026 process.
