The National Coordinator of Building Resilience Against Violent Extremism, Insurgency and Terrorism (BRAVE-IT), Dr. Ak Peters, has called for stronger national unity and a more intelligence-driven security strategy to combat terrorism and violent extremism in Nigeria.

Speaking to mark the United Nations International Day for the Prevention of Violent Extremism, Dr. Peters said Nigeria continues to suffer from terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and insurgency across several regions, describing the attacks as crimes against humanity that threaten the country’s shared values and future.

He condemned the violence in strong terms, saying no ideology or grievance could justify the killing of innocent civilians or the destruction of communities. According to him, extremist activities undermine Nigeria’s economy, faith traditions and social stability.

Dr. Peters urged the Federal Government and security agencies to strengthen their response to evolving threats through improved surveillance, border security and intelligence gathering. He also emphasized the need for increased investment in deradicalization programmes and better welfare for security personnel.

While acknowledging ongoing efforts by the armed forces, police and other security agencies, he praised their sacrifices and called for sustained support to personnel operating under difficult conditions.

The BRAVE-IT coordinator also welcomed international cooperation in counterterrorism, particularly collaboration between Nigeria and the United States in training, intelligence sharing and capacity building. He said global partnerships were essential because extremist networks operate across borders.

Beyond military action, Dr. Peters stressed that long-term success against extremism depends on addressing poverty, marginalization and lack of education, which he described as factors that fuel radicalization. He encouraged communities to strengthen local resilience by engaging youths positively, promoting education and reporting suspicious activities.

He called on parents, religious and traditional leaders, civil society groups and the private sector to play active roles in preventing radicalization and supporting economic empowerment initiatives for young people.

Dr. Peters also urged political leaders to avoid politicizing security issues, saying violent extremism affects all Nigerians regardless of political affiliation, ethnicity or religion. He appealed for bipartisan cooperation and a shared national security framework that transcends political divisions.

Reaffirming BRAVE-IT’s commitment to building resilient communities and supporting rehabilitation and reintegration initiatives, he said collaboration among government, citizens and international partners was critical to defeating extremist ideologies.

He concluded by expressing optimism that Nigeria could overcome violent extremism through unity and collective action, calling for a future in which communities can live without fear.
