Simi breaks silence as old tweets spark backlash, reaffirms stance against rape culture

Nigerian singer Simi has spoken out following the resurfacing of old tweets that triggered widespread criticism across social media. The backlash comes amid heightened online scrutiny linked to her outspoken stance against rape culture and the ongoing controversy surrounding the rape allegation involving Mirabel.

Several of Simi’s past tweets were dug up and circulated online, prompting heated debates and accusations from users. In response, the singer clarified that the posts were written when she was 23, during a period when she was hustling her music career while also helping at her mother’s daycare. She described the tweets as innocent reflections of everyday life, insisting they were not perverse and had been deliberately misinterpreted to fit false narratives.

Simi explained that her growing fame has exposed her past expressions to broader and often hostile interpretation, stressing that she never tried to hide who she was as a young woman expressing herself openly. She also disclosed that some old tweets were being deleted by her team because of their sensitivity to her family, although she was initially reluctant to remove them.

“I’m not here to make excuses because I don’t have anything to make excuses for. What I can’t let anyone do is twist my story to fit false narratives,” she said. “I’ve never been depraved in my life. I wasn’t trying to hide who I was because I don’t have anything to hide.”

Reaffirming her long-standing position, Simi said she has always spoken against rape and sexual assault, long before she became famous. “It’s not a costume I’m wearing, it’s who I am,” she added, stressing that her advocacy against sexual violence is genuine and consistent.

Her statement comes amid intense online debate, including comments from music producer Samklef, who recently called for an apology from her family, claiming involvement in laying the foundation of her early career.

Simi’s response seeks to clarify her past, counter the backlash, and reaffirm her unwavering stance against sexual assault as discussions surrounding her continue to dominate social media.
