AFCON 2025: Awoniyi Eyes Strong Start for Super Eagles

Taiwo Awoniyi, Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest FC striker, has expressed his desire for the Nigerian national team to make a strong start at the 2025 African Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Morocco.

Speaking in a telephone interview with newsmen, Awoniyi emphasized the importance of beginning the tournament on a positive note. He believes the Super Eagles have the potential to excel, starting with their AFCON qualifying match against Benin Republic’s Cheetahs on Saturday in Uyo.

“For us, representing the Super Eagles is always a big deal. We have the talent to win every game in Africa, but it’s all about coming together and playing with pride for the nation,” said Awoniyi.

After a long absence due to an injury sustained during Nigeria’s 1-1 draw against Lesotho in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier, Awoniyi is back in the squad. He expressed his excitement at returning to the team and praised his fellow teammates, stating that every player called up deserves their spot.

“It’s a privilege to play for the Super Eagles, and everyone is eager to give their best for the country. I’m happy to be back and ready to contribute,” he added.

Though he hasn’t been a regular starter for his club due to his recovery, Awoniyi remains optimistic about his future playing time. “I’m playing regularly again, and with more game time, I’ll be back to my best. We have a lot of talented players, and everyone deserves a chance,” he noted.

The Super Eagles will also face Rwanda on September 10 in Kigali for another crucial AFCON qualifier.
