Media company MultiChoice has announced plans to shut down its streaming platform Showmax after 11 years of operation.

The company informed subscribers of the decision on Thursday, noting that the move followed a comprehensive review of its digital services. The platform, which was launched in 2015 in South Africa, has served millions of viewers across Africa with movies, series and original content.

In an email sent to users, MultiChoice said the decision was part of efforts to strengthen its overall digital strategy and remain competitive in the evolving streaming industry.

“We’re writing to inform you of an important update regarding Showmax. Following a comprehensive review, the Showmax Board has taken the decision to discontinue the Showmax service in the near future,” the message to subscribers read.

The company, however, assured customers that the service will continue to operate for now, stressing that there will be no immediate interruption to streaming.

“Importantly, at the moment there will be no interruption to your current service. You can continue streaming as usual, and no action is required from you at this time,” the company said.

MultiChoice added that subscribers remain its priority and promised to provide clear communication and timelines as plans for the shutdown progress.

The development comes amid ongoing changes in the African pay-TV market, including increased investment in MultiChoice by French media giant Canal+ Group.
