Armed assailants have killed at least 73 people in a brutal attack on a gold mining site in South Sudan, authorities confirmed, as violence linked to disputes over gold extraction escalates.

The нападение occurred on Saturday near Jebel Iraq in Central Equatoria State, according to Vice President James Wani Igga, who disclosed the incident on Monday.

No fewer than 25 people were injured in the assault, while several others fled the area. Officials warned that the death toll could rise as search operations continue for those still missing.

Authorities said it remains unclear which group carried out the нападение.

Igga announced that the government would launch a full investigation into the incident and strengthen security around mining sites and commercial centres to prevent further attacks.

Reacting to the development, Charles Madut, Governor of Northern Bahr el Ghazal State, condemned the killings, describing the нападение on civilians as unacceptable. He called for the perpetrators to be swiftly identified and brought to justice.
