Downpour Wreaks Havoc on Abuja Expressway, Damages Kugbo Terminal, Triggers Hours-Long Gridlock

A heavy downpour on Tuesday paralysed movement along the Nyanya–Keffi Expressway in Abuja after parts of the Kugbo Bus Terminal were severely damaged, causing widespread traffic congestion.

The intense rainfall tore through sections of the newly constructed terminal, leaving portions of its roof compromised and debris strewn across the highway. The obstruction disrupted vehicular movement on one of the busiest routes connecting the Federal Capital Territory to neighbouring Nasarawa State.

The resulting gridlock left thousands of commuters stranded for hours, as traffic built up along the corridor during peak periods.

Eyewitnesses reported that some vehicles were damaged by falling debris, while residents and motorists joined efforts to clear the roadway in a bid to restore traffic flow.

The worst-hit area was around the Abuja Computerised Vehicle Inspection Centre operated by the Directorate of Road Traffic Services (VIO), where the obstruction significantly narrowed the passage for vehicles.

As of Tuesday evening, traffic remained slow-moving, with authorities urging motorists to exercise caution when approaching the affected axis.
